January - Crystals in urine
Crystals in urine sediment can exhibit fascinating shapes and colours under the microscope. Most types occur very often and are a normal finding (e. g. calcium oxalate). Interestingly, most crystals can be considered artefacts as they are not present in the body but developin the collection container when the urine temperature drops. Nevertheless it is important to distinguish them from diagnostically relevant particles such as red blood cells.
