October - Scalp cooling saves hair follicles during chemotherapy
Chemotherapy often leads to alopecia. Scalp cooling during chemotherapy minimises patients’ hair loss. The lower temperature and reduced metabolism in the scalp increase the probability that hair follicles survive (see right hair root) and keep a structure similar to an untreated hair follicle (see hair root in the middle). Without scalp cooling the haircells are severely damaged (see left hair root) and the hair will break.
