Augment your Sysmex experience
Validate confidently with evidence-based workflows
We live in a world full of data. But sometimes, it’s difficult to know how all this data fits together and what it’s telling us. The same is true for routine clinical laboratories worldwide. As medical devices have developed in complexity and offer more advanced clinical parameters, result interpretation and workflow management have become key to optimising the laboratory workload and clinical results reported to clinicians.
Extended IPU is a rule-based work area manager designed specifically to manage the workflow and provide a platform to manage and validate results from the Sysmex portfolio of devices and selected third-party devices across multiple laboratory disciplines.

Workflow control with Extended IPU
With the increasing complexity of automation solutions, managing the journey of the sample to ensure the lowest turnaround time for the laboratory is crucial. With the Extended IPU, you have complete control over the automation workflow for your Sysmex haematology, haemostasis and urinalysis automation lines. You can also manage a combined automation line including both haematology and haemostasis known as the BloodScience Workcell.
The Extended IPU can support the laboratory with order management including rerun and reflex testing, intelligent tube distribution to ensure the highest throughput depending on the measurement profiles ordered, and sorting and storing tubes whether you have an automated TS-10 tube sorter or sort and archive your tubes manually.
The Extended IPU manages configurations from standalone analysers to tailored automation lines. It controls the complete sample and data management, which means it also serves as a communication hub when connected to the LIS.
From workflow management within one location to connecting different laboratory locations in a network with centralised functions, the Extended IPU offers great flexibility, making it a viable solution for both single sites and laboratory networks.
Result manager with Extended IPU
How do you make the right decisions for further testing and which results should you report? Which patient results are STAT samples and should be validated first? Are your laboratory’s reference intervals violated by any of the parameters from the test panel? How to interpret an odd-looking scattergram?
With Extended IPU, the answer to all these questions is at your fingertips. With the result manager module, you have a complete overview of all standard sample, rerun and reflex tests as well as a view into the patient’s historical results allowing you to make faster, more effective decisions about reporting results to the physician and potential further analytical testing required.
With a built-in rule-based engine, the Extended IPU can standardise your laboratory’s workflow according to your current SOPs and reference intervals. Choose from standard laboratory haematology rule sets such as the Biomedical Validation or modify them to fit exactly with your requirements. These rule sets can incorporate parameters from Sysmex products such as XR-Series and parameters from selected third-party manufacturers such as Tosoh and RR Mechatronics.
Standard rule sets
Pre-analytical rules
With this rule set in place, the system automatically checks each sample according to the set pre-analysis rules, plus it checks the patient’s history and special requirements the sample may have. This makes for a smooth workflow with optimised sample processing.
Technical Validation
This rule set covers rules for assessing the reliability of results and therefore helps to ensure and provide accurate and technically sound analysis results. In addition, it manages the automatic reflex measurements of analytical alternatives. This package is the basic prerequisite for any subsequent validation steps.
